Engineering Special Steels Ltd (ESS) was incorporated in November 1992 by a management team that had been together since 1979.

The Company commenced trading in January 1993 from leased premises in Sheffield employing 6 people. During August 1995 the business moved to its current location having acquired the freehold of the 1.65 acre site with warehousing comprising of 26,000 sq.ft. and office accommodation of 2850 sq.ft.

In September 1995 we acquired Sheffield Deep Bore Ltd. (SDB) a small jobbing machine shop and relocated them at Catley Road. A major investment programme was embarked upon in Plant, Machinery and Human Resources.

Sheffield Deep Bore is now a fully integrated machine shop with the capacity to turn and bore 10 metre lengths.

In May 1997 ESS acquired Ancon Special Steels Ltd, a well established Sheffield based distributor of Tool and High Speed steels. This business was merged with Special Alloy Steels Ltd in March 2001 to form Ancon Special Alloy Steels Ltd (ASAS).

During October 2001 the Group acquired a 70,000 sq.ft. warehouse some 6 miles from Catley Road in Rotherham. On completion of a radical refurbishment programme the entire distribution operations of the Group were relocated to this site. This would allow SDB to fully utilise and dedicate the Catley Road site to machining.

Today, the Group is completely independent with warehouse and machine shop facilities in excess of 100,000 sq.ft. It employs 65 people and offers the offshore oil and related industries a multitude of metals from Low Alloys to Super Stainless Steels in everything from bar form to fully machined parts truly encompassing our 'One Stop Shop' philosophy.
